While it is readily available in stores, making your own homemade lemoncello is surprisingly easy and allows you to customize the flavor to your liking. So, put on your apron and let’s get started on making this delicious drink!
Ingredients:
10-12 organic lemons
1 liter of high-quality vodka or grain alcohol
2 cups of water
2 cups of sugar
Instructions:
1. Wash and dry the lemons thoroughly. It is important to use organic lemons as they are free from any pesticides or chemicals that may affect the taste of your lemoncello.
2. Using a vegetable peeler, carefully remove the yellow part of the lemon peel, avoiding the white pith as it can make your lemoncello bitter. You can also use a microplane grater to zest the lemons, but peeling them with a vegetable peeler will give you longer and thicker strips of lemon peel, which is ideal for infusing the alcohol.
3. Place the lemon peels in a large glass jar or airtight container. Pour the vodka or grain alcohol over the peels, making sure they are fully submerged. Seal the jar tightly and place it in a cool, dark place for at least 10 days. The longer you let it sit, the stronger the lemon flavor will be.
4. After 10 days, strain the lemon peels from the alcohol using a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Make sure to squeeze out as much liquid as possible from the peels.
5. In a saucepan, combine 2 cups of water and 2 cups of sugar. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved. Let the syrup cool to room temperature.
6. Once the syrup is cooled, add it to the infused alcohol and stir well. Taste the mixture and adjust the sweetness to your liking by adding more sugar syrup if needed.
7. Pour the lemoncello into clean glass bottles or jars and seal them tightly. Let the bottles sit in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks before serving. This will allow the flavors to fully develop and mellow out the alcohol.
8. When ready to serve, keep the lemoncello in the freezer for a few hours before serving. This will give it a slushy consistency and make it even more refreshing.
9. Serve the homemade lemoncello in chilled shot glasses or mix it with some sparkling water or prosecco for a refreshing cocktail.
Tips:
You can use any type of alcohol for this recipe, but higher proof alcohol like grain alcohol will give you a stronger and more flavorful lemoncello.
For a twist on traditional lemoncello, you can add other citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, or limes to the mix.
Use the leftover lemon-infused alcohol to make lemon drop cocktails or add it to your favorite desserts for a burst of lemon flavor.
Making homemade lemoncello may take some time and patience, but the end result is worth it. This tangy and sweet liqueur is perfect for any occasion and also makes a great gift for your loved ones. So, gather your ingredients and start making your own batch of lemoncello today!
